Manager is optimistic but says midfielder in a “race against time”

England coach Thomas Tuchel is not sure that Jude Bellingham can make the squad for the Three Lions’ friendlies in March.

The midfielder was injured in action for Real Madrid against Rayo Vallecano earlier this month. Scans later confirmed he sustained a hamstring injury and could be out of action for up to four weeks.

Tuchel said the 22-year-old was working hard to make the squad but chances were that he would be unable to feature. Bellingham’s place in the England squad is under threat given the amount of talent England have in that position, including Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo.

“The club is a bit more defensive on the outlook regarding the weeks of his recovery, but Jude is pushing, and as we know him, he is determined and super professional,” Tuchel said.

“He will try everything to be with us in March. Of course we are in contact, that is a normal thing to do, and we wish him all the best.

“Whatever we can do for him, we will help and support him. It is a little race against time. Personally, I am optimistic, but I am not sure.”
