Francesco Totti warns Lautaro Martinez ‘did not pick the right moment’ to criticize teammate Hakan Calhanoglu amid growing Inter controversy.
Francesco Totti believes Lautaro Martinez “did not pick the right moment” to publicly criticize teammate Hakan Calhanoglu.
The comments come after Inter’s 2-0 defeat to Fluminense in the Club World Cup, which was overshadowed by Martinez’s scathing remarks towards Calhanoglu. Totti acknowledges that only the team’s internal dynamics can explain the situation, but emphasises that Martinez’s public stand was poorly timed.
Totti doesn’t think the issue is a hangover from Inter’s disappointing previous season, which saw the team end empty-handed and lose the Champions League final 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain. Instead, he believes it’s a new season with new challenges.
However, the situation becomes complicated when both the captain and the president gang up on one player, making it difficult and unpleasant for the Inter fans.
Calhanoglu is reportedly eager to join Galatasaray, but hasn’t made an official request, according to Inter President Beppe Marotta. Both Martinez and Marotta have stated that if a player isn’t enthusiastic about staying, it’s best for them to leave. Calhanoglu’s injury ruled him out of the Club World Cup, but he was part of the squad.
