Tottenham showed early promise, creating their first real chance within five minutes. Randal Kolo Muani set up Richarlison, but the forward’s tame effort summed up the inefficiency that has plagued the team in recent months. Sunderland gradually grew into the contest, with Granit Xhaka leading their attacking efforts. The midfielder even attempted an ambitious Olimpico, forcing a sharp save from Antonín Kinský.
Kinský was one of Spurs’ standout performers, producing key saves to deny Brian Brobbey on multiple occasions. However, defensive lapses continued to expose Tottenham’s vulnerability, particularly from set pieces.
Tottenham were left frustrated before halftime when a penalty decision was overturned by VAR after a challenge involving Omar Alderete and Luke O’Nien on Kolo Muani.
The visitors again started the second half strongly, with Richarlison going close twice, but their inability to convert chances proved costly. Sunderland capitalised through Nordi Mukiele, whose deflected strike gave the hosts the lead. Tottenham pushed for an equaliser late on, with Pedro Porro coming closest during stoppage time. Despite 11 minutes of added time, they failed to break through Sunderland’s defence.
The defeat leaves Tottenham in a precarious position, with time running out to secure survival. A crucial clash with Brighton & Hove Albion looms next, while Sunderland’s victory significantly boosts their hopes of finishing in the European places.
