Tottenham saw their impressive start to the season halted by Bournemouth as they suffered a  1-0 defeat.

Tottenham’s winning streak came to an abrupt end with a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The visitors scored early, with Evanilson netting in the fifth minute, and held on to their lead despite Spurs’ efforts to equalise.

This loss highlights Tottenham’s poor record in games directly before international breaks, with their last win dating back to October 2023.

The Lilywhites were out of sorts throughout the match, managing just one shot on target compared to Bournemouth’s six. Thomas Frank’s side was fortunate not to concede a penalty when Mohammed Kudus caught Marcos Senesi, but ultimately, the team’s defensive frailties were exposed.

Bournemouth’s dominance was reflected in the expected goals statistic, with the visitors racking up 1.45 xG compared to Spurs’ meagre 0.17.

The defeat was a reality check for Tottenham, who had been riding high after their 2-0 win over Manchester City last weekend. However, the team’s inability to create scoring opportunities against Bournemouth raises concerns about their attacking prowess. New signing Xavi Simons, who watched the match from the sidelines, is expected to bring much-needed creativity to the team.

Dominic Solanke’s absence from the squad due to injury will be a concern for Frank, and the team may look to sign a new striker to bolster their options. With the international break looming, Spurs will need to regroup and reassess their strategy to bounce back stronger.

Frank acknowledged that his team didn’t perform well, saying, “We clearly didn’t perform well today. We played against a very good Bournemouth team that we know can make it difficult for any team in the league.” He also praised Bournemouth’s performance, adding that they “played to their strengths” and “did that very well.”

The loss has put a dent in Tottenham’s momentum, but Frank remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. With Simons set to join the team, Spurs fans are hoping for an instant impact. Frank believes Simons can bring “that extra quality that you need on the day,” which could make all the difference in upcoming matches.
