Tottenham Hotspur’s uninspiring performance in Monaco ended in a 0-0 draw, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario making crucial saves to secure a point.
Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Monaco’s Stade Louis II ended in a goalless draw, with the Italian side relying heavily on goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s brilliance and a dose of good fortune to escape with a point.
The game was a dismal display by Thomas Frank’s side, who failed to create meaningful chances and mustered only two shots on target.
Spurs’ supporters who made the trip to Monaco were unimpressed with their team’s performance, booing as the final whistle sounded. They had expected more from a team that reached the Champions League by winning the Europa League last season. The visiting fans’ discontent was palpable, and rightly so, as Spurs seemed content to settle for a draw after surviving numerous scares.
Vicario was the hero of the hour, making several exceptional saves to keep Monaco at bay. He thwarted Folarin Balogun, Maghnes Akliouche, and Aleksandr Golovin, among others, and was instrumental in securing the point for Spurs.
Frank praised his goalkeeper, saying, “I think he was very good today. I think some of the saves were exceptional.”
Monaco, on the other hand, was guilty of woeful finishing, with Takumi Minamino wasting three presentable late chances. The home fans grew increasingly frustrated as opportunities went begging, and it seemed they would be victims of a smash-and-grab.
Spurs currently lie 15th in the Champions League table and will need to improve significantly if they are to make a serious dent in the competition. Their next two games are at home to FC Copenhagen and away to Paris St. Germain, who will not be as forgiving as Monaco if given the sort of licence they offered here.
The draw was Spurs’ first 0-0 in 125 games, and it highlighted their struggles to adapt to the demands of Europe’s elite tournament. They will need to rediscover their winning touch if they are to progress in the competition.
