Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Ben Davies will undergo surgery after suffering a broken ankle, raising concerns over his availability for Wales’ upcoming World Cup playoff campaign.

The 32-year-old Wales captain sustained the injury during Tottenham’s 2-1 home defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday, in a match that added to Tottenham’s growing injury concerns.

Davies’ injury appeared serious immediately, with the defender requiring oxygen before being carried off on a stretcher just 19 minutes into the contest.

In a statement released on the club’s official website, Tottenham confirmed the severity of the injury and the next steps in his recovery process.

“We can confirm that Ben Davies will undergo surgery today for a fracture of his left ankle,” the statement read. “Following the surgery, Ben will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”

The setback comes at a difficult time for Tottenham, who are already without several senior players ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League home clash against Borussia Dortmund.

Beyond club concerns, Davies’ injury could also prove a significant blow for Wales, who face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup playoff semi-final at the Cardiff City Stadium on March 26, with a potential final against either Northern Ireland or Italy scheduled for March 31.
