History is meant to be written, and Tottenham has done just that.
Tottenham Hotspur have written their names in the sands of time by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final. It was a mix of joy, happiness, and excitement for Tottenham players and fans as they won their first European trophy since 1984.
The match felt like a very cautious affair. Both teams knew that this meant the entire world to their fanbase, especially after the blunder of a season they have both had. It was a must-win for both teams, but only one team was ever going to come out on top.
The match started just like any fan would expect. Both teams were being careful and, to an extent, respectful to each other, but as time began to wind down, cracks started to show in both sides. Spurs had the first foray into the final third, and there were very few cracks in the Manchester United defence.
Johnson had the first chance of the game after testing Onana from a cross that was played very close to the Cameroonian goalkeeper. Amad had the most threatening chance of the first 20 minutes after flashing a fierce shot across goal. For a moment, the stadium went silent.
Manchester United were very patient in their build-up play, and you could’ve predicted that they would get the first goal, but that wasn’t in the script. Tottenham carved a chance after holding possession for a while, and the outcome was a blissful one. Pape Materr Sarr floated a cross into the box, finding the feet of Brennan Johnson. Johnson tried to control, but the ball hit the body of Luke Shaw. The ball bounced kindly for him and fell back into the Tottenham forward’s path before poking it past Onana.
The stadium erupted with joy. Tottenham had the lead in the dying embers of the second half. It felt unreal; they just needed to hold on for another 45 minutes, and they would be champions.
In the second half, they gave it their all. They held on. You could see them hustling for every ball, not with the intent of attacking, but to defend their slender lead till the end. Manchester United almost equalized through Holjund after Vicario made a mess of a free kick, but the ball was cleared acrobatically off the line by Van de Ven.
Tottenham had a lot of work to do because Manchester United kept piling the pressure. Bruno Fernandes had a very good chance to equalize, but he failed to direct his header on target. Garnacho had another swing, but Vicario was equal to the task. Manchester United had a chance at the tail end of the match to equalize, but it just wasn’t their day.
Luke Shaw latched onto a cross and headed at goal. It seemed like a sure goal, but Vicario made a point-blank save to deny Shaw and keep his team in the lead. It was frantic. Tottenham fans had their hearts in their mouth, this could be their day. They just had to wait a little longer.
At the sound of the referee’s whistle, it was confirmed. Tottenham Hotspur have done it, a European trophy at long last. Brennan Johnson will be named a hero, Son will have his first-ever trophy, Postecoglou will be vindicated, and Spurs will add a trophy to their cabinet. It just doesn’t get better than this.
The joy of the faces of everyone associated with the club paints a picture of how much they prayed for this moment and for Manchester United, they ask the question, where do they go from here?
