Tottenham Hotspur’s sporting director, Johan Lange, has defended the club’s decision not to make more signings during the January transfer window, citing the need to “remain disciplined” and prioritize long-term goals.
Despite being 14th in the Premier League table and dealing with a raft of injuries, Tottenham only brought in Conor Gallagher and Souza, with Lange explaining that the club didn’t anticipate the extent of the injury crisis.
Lange revealed that the club’s approach was influenced by the unexpected number of injuries, with seven players missing during January alone. “When we go into January, we didn’t anticipate that we’ll have seven injuries during the month of January,” he said. “So, that of course changes things during the course of the window.”
The club’s focus is now on the summer transfer window, where Lange expects significant changes. “The summer market is where eight or nine out of 10 players, they move clubs, so we will go into the summer window with big ambitions of strengthening the team,” he said.
Lange emphasized that Tottenham are committed to signing players who can make an immediate impact, while also considering the club’s long-term strategy. “It’s a combination of buying players who are ready here now and buying those, can you say, younger players and then, of course, your own academy players as well.”
Tottenham’s injury list has grown over the course of the season, with key players like Kudus, Bentancur, Bergvall, Richarlison, and Porro all out.
Thomas Frank faces a tough task in working with the depleted squad, particularly with the team traveling to Manchester United on Saturday.
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has slammed the squad’s lack of depth, calling it “disgraceful” after the quiet transfer window. The club’s struggles have been evident, with just two wins in their last 15 Premier League games.
Lange remains optimistic about the future, highlighting the club’s financial situation and owner support. “We have owners who are very willing to invest, it is important that we are under those rules,” he said, emphasizing the need to sign the right players.
