Former Real Madrid midfielder believes the Turkey international is using his attacking skills effectively for the club

Toni Kroos is “very happy” to see Arda Guler performing at a top level for Real Madrid this season but does not want the midfielder to be viewed as his successor.

Guler has been one of the standout beneficiaries of Alonso’s arrival in May. After spending most of last season on the fringes under Carlo Ancelotti, he was immediately pushed into a central role at the Club World Cup, where Alonso oversaw his first games as head coach.

The Turkey international impressed in a central midfield position, as opposed to the right-sided role in which he was used last term.

His form since has secured him a permanent place in Madrid’s lineup. Guler has featured in all 16 matches this season, starting 14, and his productive partnership with Kylian Mbappe has drawn comparisons to that of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil. The pair have successfully combined nine times already this season.

“I’m very happy that he’s getting significantly more playing time this year for the first time, because he deserves it based on his footballing ability and he’s a lad we can count on in the future,” said Kroos.

Regarding suggestions that the teenager is following directly in his footsteps, the German said: “I don’t believe in comparisons. Arda is also a different type of player than me. His best position is much more attacking than mine, so it’s not about him succeeding me at all.

“But I’m generally pleased because he’s a good lad. I’ve played alongside him. He has a really delicate touch, which he’s already used very effectively for Real this season.

“That’s why I hope he continues to get consistent playing time, because that’s the only way to improve. Then I’m sure he can make his mark at Real for many years to come.”
