Takehiro Tomiyasu has joined Ajax on a six-month contract, marking a new chapter in his career after a 14-month injury ordeal.
Tomiyasu had played just one game since May 2024 due to injuries, and his Arsenal contract was terminated by mutual agreement in July.
Tomiyasu expressed his gratitude to Ajax and the people who supported him during his tough time. “I feel very excited, and I’m delighted to be here,” he said. “I would like to thank everyone who was around me. Obviously, I’ve been out for about 12 months, and it was a tough period for me.”
The 27-year-old defender suffered a severe knee injury ahead of the 2024/25 season, and required additional surgery in February. He played only one game for Arsenal, against Southampton in October 2024. Tomiyasu is eager to get back to playing and prove himself.
Tomiyasu’s move to Ajax is a fresh start, and he’s excited about the opportunity. “For sure. I’ve been out for twelve months, and it’s like a fresh restart for me,” he said. “When I spoke with the people from Ajax, I could feel that they believed in my ability and qualities.”
Despite Ajax’s current struggles, Tomiyasu is optimistic about the team’s chances. “I know the situation of the club,” he said. “We have a lot of young players and are struggling a little at the moment, but I think we still have a chance to win the league.”
Tomiyasu spoke to Arsenal teammate Jurrien Timber before joining Ajax, and was reassured by Timber’s positive feedback. “I’ve asked him about Ajax, about the club and the city. He only had good things to say about the club,” Tomiyasu revealed.
