Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has promised to make January signings after a deflating 1-1 draw against Sunderland, which saw the team jeered by frustrated fans.
Frank defended the decision to sell Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35 million, despite the Wales forward’s 18-goal haul last season. Johnson had largely lost his place to Mohammed Kudus, who was injured during the Sunderland match.
The team struggled to create chances without Johnson, and Frank admitted they “lacked a little extra freshness”. Despite taking the lead through Ben Davies, Sunderland equalized in the 80th minute through Brian Brobbey.
Frank insisted the decision to sell Johnson was made before Kudus’ injury and pointed out that Tottenham hadn’t been good at selling players in the past. “Sometimes, you know, the decisions make more sense further down the line,” he said.
The move raised eyebrows given Johnson’s finishing ability and Tottenham’s lack of cutting edge. Frank fielded questions on the decision, saying “decisions are made and decisions I’m backing in every aspect”.
Tottenham are currently 13th in the Premier League, and fans have been critical of their performances. Frank acknowledged the pressure and vowed to strengthen the squad in January.
“We are really alert, the club really want to see what we can do to strengthen the squad and the team,” Frank said, hinting at possible signings in the upcoming window.
