34-year-old will work closely with Flick and the first-team squad

Thiago Alcantara has returned to Barcelona to join Hansi Flick’s coaching team. The 34-year-old was present at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Monday and attended internal meetings.

The former Spain international retired from playing last year after leaving Liverpool. He now takes up an assistant role under Flik having spent part of last summer with the squad during pre-season.

Thiago’s return comes after discussions with the club and with Flick, who coached him at Bayern Munich during their treble-winning 2019-20 campaign.

The 34-year-old is a graduate of La Masia and made over 100 appearances for Barcelona before moving to Bayern in 2013. He went on to lift 15 trophies in seven years in Germany before joining Liverpool, where he helped the club win the FA Cup and League Cup.

The decision to step into coaching at Barcelona is both a nod to his roots at the club and a continuation of his working relationship with Flick.

Thiago will work closely with Flick and the first-team squad. He is expected to support the manager while also acting as a mentor to the younger players.
