Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo back surgery and is expected to be sidelined for around three months, the player confirmed on Thursday.

The 33-year-old has not trained since Barcelona returned for pre-season earlier this month and has been managing ongoing pain.

After consultation with the club’s medical staff and outside specialists, surgery was deemed the best option.

“Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain,” said Ter Stegen.

“After intensive discussions with the Barcelona medical team and external experts, we’ve decided that the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery.

“After my last operation on my back, I returned to the pitch after 66 days. This time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks.”

The decision adds further uncertainty around Ter Stegen’s future at the club. Barcelona recently signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol for €25m, with the 24-year-old considered the long-term option in goal. Wojciech Szczęsny, who extended his contract with Barcelona earlier this summer, is expected to cover in the short term.

The club were reportedly open to moving Ter Stegen on this window, but the player had no desire to leave and remains committed to reclaiming his place. The injury makes that significantly harder.

“Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time,” said Ter Stegen. “Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear.”
