Dutchman was discussed alongside former boss Gary O’Neil but the latter has withdrawn from the process

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is among candidates being considered by Premier league club Wolverhampton Wanderers to replace Vitor Pereira.

Also under consideration was a shocking return for ex-boss Gary O’Neil, who was sacked just last December and replaced by Pereira. However, O’Neill has withdrawn from the process, according to The Athletic.

Pereira’s departure was confirmed following a winless start to the Premier League season that saw Wolves lose eight and draw two of their opening ten matches.

The club sit eight points from safety and have not won a league game since April.

Talks were understood to be advanced with O’Neil and he was the leading candidate before his withdrawal. However, Ten Hag has also been discussed internally. No appointment is expected this week.

Ten Hag has been out of work since September, when he was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after only three games. A role for the Dutchman at the Molineux would be surprising, given his reputation in his second and third seasons at Manchester United, with each of those campaigns leading to the club’s lowest league finish in the Premier League era.

James Collins and Richard Walker, Wolves’ under-21 and under-18 head coaches respectively, are currently overseeing first-team duties while the club finalises a permanent appointment.
