Szczesny’s new deal piles more uncertainty on Ter Stegen’s long-term role, especially after the signing of Joan Garcia from Espanyol this summer
Wojciech Szczesny has signed a contract extension with Barcelona, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2027.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper came out of retirement last season to join the Catalan side on an emergency deal. He ultimately became a key player in Hansi Flick’s debut campaign, stepping in for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen and helping Barcelona secure a domestic treble.
Szczesny made 30 appearances across all competitions in 2024-25, keeping 14 clean sheets. He also did not lose any matches in La Liga, a run that included 14 wins and a draw. His form was a key factor in Barcelona reclaiming the league title and adding both the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup to their trophy cabinet.
His professionalism and reliability last season are reportedly the reason the club decided to offer him such an extension despite his age, with Flick known to value his experience and leadership.
Szczesny’s new deal piles more uncertainty on Ter Stegen’s long-term role. The German international returned to fitness late last season but did not reclaim the starting spot, sparking speculation over his future. Barcelona have also moved to sign 24-year-old Joan Garcia from Espanyol this summer, which is likely to push Ter Stegen to third choice.
