Veteran vows to help Joan Garcia rise to the demands of the highest level
Wojciech Szczesny has said he has no problems with being Barcelona’s reserve goalkeeper and is focused on helping his replacement Joan Garcia establish himself as the club’s new first choice.
Szczesny was called out of retirement last season by Hansi Flick and went on to play an important part in Barcelona’s successful season, taking the No 1 spot from both Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Inaki Pena. He signed a one-year extension this summer but has not played for a single minute for Barcelona following the arrival of Garcia.
The 35-year-old said he was comfortable with the change in status.
“I’m a backup and, barring any surprises, I’ll continue to be one,” said Szczesny. “My role this season is to prepare Joan Garcia as best I can for matches.
“I’m very proud to play this role. I prepared for it when I signed my new contract, and I’m not disappointed.”
Garcia has been highly impressive for the La Liga champions since his summer move from local rivals Espanyol. Szczesny said he was “already among the best in Europe physically” but now needs to adapt to the demands of playing at the highest level.
“Joan lacks experience playing at the top level and that’s something he needs to work on,” Szczesny said. “I’ll try to help him maintain a consistent level throughout the season.
“It’s not easy to play every three days under so much pressure. It’s something he needs to learn. I hope I can contribute to his success.”
