Forward missed Sweden’s first game due to a lack of match fitness

Sweden head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has said Alexander Isak could make his first appearance of the international break when his side face Kosovo on Monday.

The striker was on the bench for Friday’s 2-2 draw with Slovakia, with Tomasson judging it too great a risk to involve him given his lack of fitness.

Isak missed all of Newcastle United’s pre-season and the opening weeks of the Premier League as he pushed through a move to Liverpool, completed on deadline day.

He was called up to the Sweden squad even while he was effectively on strike against Newcastle, but he has still had limited training time.

“He had only done three training sessions with the team,” said Tomasson. “He had no preseason with the team and of course no playing time.

“Hopefully [he can play against Kosovo], as a game-changer.”

Sweden twice led in Bratislava before being pegged back, with new Newcastle signing Anthony Elanga among the scorers.

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres set up Yasin Ayari late in the game and Sweden thought they had won it, but Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko then set up Zan Vipotnik to level in stoppage time.
