Former Liverpool and Barcelona forward has tendered an apology for his actions
Luis Suarez has been banned for six Leagues Cup matches after the Inter Miami striker spat at a staff member of the Seattle Sounders during last weekend’s final.
The 38-year-old was involved in a confrontation following the Sounders’ 3-0 win, which secured them the trophy.
The melee also saw former Barcelona midfielder and Suarez’s current teammate Sergio Busquets strike a Sounders player on the chin.
The Leagues Cup disciplinary committee confirmed on Friday that Suarez will serve a six-match suspension when the tournament returns next year. Busquets has been banned for two matches.
A staff member of the Sounders, assistant coach Steven Lenhart, was also banned for five games after he too was cited for violent conduct.
The sanctions apply only to the Leagues Cup, which features MLS and Liga MX teams every season. MLS has to decide whether it will hand down additional punishment to all offenders.
Suarez Apologises After Spitting Incident in Leagues Cup Final
Luis Suarez has apologised for spitting on a coaching staff of the Seattle Sounders following Inter Miami’s defeat in the Leagues Cup final last weekend.
In a statement posted to Instagram on Thursday, Suarez admitted his actions were unacceptable.
“It was a moment of much tension and frustration, where just after the game ended things happened that shouldn’t have happened but that doesn’t justify my reaction,” said Suarez.
