This latest punishment follows the six-match ban awarded by the Leagues Cup itself
Luis Suarez has been banned for three MLS matches for spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member during the Leagues Cup final between Inter Miami and the Sounders.
The 38-year-old forward was already given a six-game suspension last week from the Leagues Cup itself.
With the latest punishment, Suarez will sit out league fixtures against Charlotte on 13 September, the Seattle Sounders on 16 September, and DC United on 20 September.
The incident in question took place after Inter were defeated 3-0 by the Sounders in the final. Suarez became involved in a heated exchange on the pitch before spitting on a member of the Sounders’ staff.
He later issued an apology on social media, acknowledging he “made a mistake”.
“It was a moment of much tension and frustration, where just after the game ended things happened that shouldn’t have happened but that doesn’t justify my reaction,” said Suarez.
Inter Miami also condemned the forward’s actions, saying in a statement that they “do not reflect the values of our sport”.
Suarez’s teammate Sergio Busquets was also involved in the post-match confrontation, striking a player on the chin. However, he escaped further punishment from MLS, having already received a two-match ban from the Leagues Cup.
