Inter Miami has also condemned the player’s actions as not reflective of “the values of our sport”
Luis Suarez has apologised for spitting on a coaching staff of the Seattle Sounders following Inter Miami’s defeat in the Leagues Cup final last weekend.
The 38-year-old forward and his teammates were involved in a heated confrontation at the end of the Sounders’ 3-0 victory on Sunday, during which Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets also struck a Sounders player on the chin.
In a statement posted to Instagram on Thursday, Suarez admitted his actions were unacceptable.
“It was a moment of much tension and frustration, where just after the game ended things happened that shouldn’t have happened but that doesn’t justify my reaction,” said Suarez.
“I made a mistake and sincerely apologise. It is not the image I want to give in front of my family, that suffers because of my mistakes, in front of my club, that also doesn’t deserve seeing themselves affected by something like this.
“I feel bad for what happened, and I didn’t want to let pass the opportunity to recognise and apologise to everyone that felt bad for what I did.”
Inter Miami also condemned the scenes, saying in a statement that the player’s actions “do not reflect the values of our sport”.
“We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship both on and off the pitch,” said the club.
“We are working closely with Leagues Cup and MLS officials to ensure the situation is addressed appropriately.”
Suarez has a history of condemnable behaviour throughout his career. He has previously served bans for three separate biting incidents while playing for Ajax, Liverpool and Uruguay.
