Foreign minister vows to pursue legal action against those responsible
Spain’s foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares has condemned the “inappropriate behaviour” by a section of fans during the goalless friendly between Spain and Egypt in Barcelona during the last international window.
The match was overshadowed by offensive chants by some supporters directed towards Muslims. Spain fans were seen jumping and singing: “Bote, bote, bote musulman el que no bote,” which translates to “Jump, jump, jump, whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim.” The chant was repeated during the first half and shortly after the break.
A stadium announcement was made urging fans to refrain from racist, homophobic or xenophobic behaviour, with the same message displayed on the big screen. The warning was met with whistles from parts of the crowd.
The incident has drawn criticism from both sporting and political circles. Lamine Yamal also publicly denounced the behaviour.
According to a statement from the Egyptian government, Albares addressed the issue in a phone call with Egypt’s minister of foreign affairs where he stressed Spain’s firm rejection of any racist or offensive conduct.
The Spanish official said the incident “does not represent the Spanish people nor does it reflect the distinguished historical relations between the two countries”.
Albares added that authorities would pursue legal action against those responsible, insisting that Spain “will not tolerate any form of hatred or discrimination”.
