Barcelona midfielder could have a meniscus operation, says Luis de la Fuente
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that Barcelona midfielder Gavi is still awaiting clarity on his latest knee problem, with surgery not ruled out.
Gavi was forced to withdraw from Spain’s squad for September’s international break, after missing Barcelona’s draw with Rayo Vallecano last weekend. The midfielder has been managing discomfort in his knee and remains under medical evaluation.
“I spoke with him, he’s sad, waiting to see if a meniscus operation will be necessary,” said De la Fuente. “He’s very strong and I offered him some encouragement because these are the moments where you grow stronger.”
Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona are hopeful that conservative treatment could help Gavi avoid another operation, with earlier reports saying they expect him to return to action quickly.
Specialists are continuing to monitor the situation. If surgery is required, the midfielder could be sidelined for around a month.
The injury is another setback for Gavi, who was eased back into action last season after missing much of 2023-24 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
His absence is particularly a concern for Barcelona, as manager Hansi Flick rates the midfielder highly and the club face a demanding run of fixtures in La Liga and the Champions League.
