Liverpool boss fears attacking improvements he has seen may have come at the expense of defence

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has said his side must make improvements in defence after conceding twice in their Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace.

The Premier League champions were beaten 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley, extending the run of defensive weakness that has seen them concede ten goals in their last five matches.

Liverpool have invested heavily this summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. But those are mostly attacking reinforcements. Frimpong and Kerkez are full-backs but their value is chiefly in going forward, in the style that Jurgen Klopp introduced to the club.

Slot admitted he had seen improvements in attacking fluency in his new-look side, such as was not present last season when they won the title.

“What made us really strong last season was we only won mostly by a margin of one goal and that had mostly to do with us keeping a clean sheet or as a maximum conceding one goal,” said Slot.

“Now we need maybe a little bit of adjustment defensively because we don’t concede a lot of chances, but we do concede goals at the moment.”
