Liverpool manager says “we have enough options left”
Arne Slot says Liverpool are not in urgent need of signing a new central defender, despite a shortage of specialist options in the squad.
Joe Gomez left the club’s pre-season tour of Asia and flew back to England after picking up a minor Achilles injury, leaving Slot short-handed for the 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong.
Ryan Gravenberch partnered Virgil van Dijk at the back in an improvised defensive pairing, but the Liverpool head coach said he remains relaxed about the situation.
“I’m looking to my left and I don’t think we have a concern at centre-back,” said Slot. “In terms of depth, Ryan played there today and did well. He did the same last season.
“Wataru [Endo] can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury, he has been good for us last season as well.”
Liverpool sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer and have yet to bring in a direct replacement. The club have been linked with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, though no deal has materialised.
Slot said: “We have enough options left. But it’s true that Jarell Quansah left and we haven’t replaced him yet.”
