Liverpool have only lifted the Premier League trophy once, and Reds fans were not there to see it
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has urged his team to remain focused as they prepare for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, where a single point would secure the club’s 20th English top-flight title.
In his first season at the helm, Slot has guided Liverpool to the brink of equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 league titles.
The only time Liverpool has won the Premier League (the modern format established in 1992) was in 2020 during the pandemic, which meant that the fans were not present at the stadium to celebrate with the team.
However, Arne Slot’s side has the opportunity to make that happen by not losing to Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday. While Spurs are 16th in the league and have lost 18 matches all season – the most of any side staying up – the Liverpool boss is not taking the task lightly.
“It’s a big responsibility,” Slot said in his pre-match press conference. “We are aware that the last time this club won the league was during the Covid time. So everybody is looking forward to Sunday.
“But we know there’s still a job to do. We need at least one point.
“That is what we know and, hopefully, what our fans know as well when they come to the stadium, that they support us in the best possible way as they have done all season, but also be aware of the fact that we still need a point.”
Slot then added that it would not be easy to play Tottenham, who are still competing in the Europa League semi-finals against Bodo/Glimt and would want to head into their midweek fixture “in the best possible prepared way”.
Liverpool have lost only twice in the Premier League this season, against Fulham and Nottingham Forest, with the latter defeat coming at Anfield.
