Manager does not expect a busy end to the window for the club

Arne Slot has refused to be drawn on speculation linking Liverpool with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, ahead of the two clubs’ Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Monday.

Isak has been agitating for a move away from Newcastle this summer, with his likely destination Anfield. Liverpool made a £110m bid for him early in August but it was swiftly rejected.

The Sweden international has since accused the Magpies of breaking promises in a social media post, while the club insist they have made no commitment to sell.

Isak has not trained with Eddie Howe’s squad and missed their opening-day draw with Aston Villa. Slot was asked about the situation on Thursday ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Tyneside on Monday but the Dutchman sidestepped the question.

“What I can tell you is not a lot,” said Slot. “I can impact games with who we have on the bench, so it would be much nicer to talk about who we have.”

Liverpool’s manager added that he does not expect a frantic finish to the window. The champions remain linked with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but Slot suggested any additions would only arrive if they are players who can significantly improve the squad.

“I’m very, very happy with the squad we have,” said Slot. “Two per position is ideal but I prefer less than more because you have to disappoint so many players every single time.”
