Managers not only have to win games but also make sure fans love what they see, says Liverpool head coach
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said that what happened in his side’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal is exactly why the Premier League continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
Already crowned champions, Liverpool came into the game eager for a win after having lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week. However, despite taking an early two-nil lead at Anfield, the home side saw their second-placed rivals fight tooth and nail in an enthralling second half to level the score.
“I think all over this is why people like the Premier League so much: two great teams that are competing with each other and a fantastic game of football,” Slot said after the match.
“Both teams showing so much quality. Four goals, 2-2, both teams could have won it in the end.”
It was indeed a proper Premier League classic. Arsenal goalscorer Mikel Merino was sent off on a double yellow card with 11 minutes to go, after a double foul on Darwin Nunez and Domink Szoboszlai. Liverpool nearly went 3-2 up soon after, but when Andy Robertson scored during a melee following a corner kick. However, Ibrahima Konate was ruled to have fouled Myles Lewis-Skelly when the corner was taken.
And Slot, who has often emphasised the competitiveness of the Premier League, was eager to point out the spectacle of Sunday’s game for the supporters.
“This is what makes the Premier League so special and this is also what we have to try as managers, not only to win games but also make sure the fans like what they see,” said the Dutchman.
