Liverpool manager says a draw “would have been a fairer result”
Arne Slot has conceded his side did not do enough to merit their win against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Liverpool had a poor first half and did not get much better in the second, although they had a few clear chances to score. Forest, much improved under new manager Vitor Pereira, were heartbroken after Alexis Mac Allister poked home at the death to secure three points for Slot’s team.
“Today we did not play a good game – the performance, especially in the first half, was not as we’ve had so many times this season,” said Slot.
“But we’ve been on the wrong side of the score after a good performance far too many times. Today, I think we got more than we deserved. A draw would have been a fairer result of this game than for us to win it.
“But then you think you win it because Hugo [Ekitike] already got a big, big, big chance from a great cross from Rio Ngumoha, misses it, the ball comes back, goes into the net. Since VAR is there, I always struggle to celebrate too much if I think, ‘There might be something going on.’
“You never know if a ball has hit the body where it ended up. Apparently it ended up on his arm, so it was disallowed.”
Victory keeps Liverpool firmly on the hunt for the Champions League places, leaving them on the same points as Chelsea and Manchester United (45), although the latter have a game in hand.
Goal-hero Mac Allister said: “I love scoring, I love winning, so in that sense I think it’s a really good day.
“But on the other hand, I don’t think we played very well. There’s plenty of things we need to improve, but it’s always nicer when you win.”
