The 49-year-old’s exit comes after defeat to PSG and a late collapse that saw Inter go from chasing the treble to going trophyless within a month
Simone Inzaghi has left Inter Milan, with the club announcing on Tuesday that the two parties have parted ways by mutual agreement. This comes just three days after Inter’s crushing 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
Inzaghi, who took charge of the Nerazzurri in 2021, leaves San Siro after four seasons, having delivered six trophies but fallen short of restoring Inter to European glory.
Despite his successes at the club, the chief highlights of his tenure may just be the painful near-misses on the big stage.
“The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year journey, during which I gave everything,” Inzaghi said in an emotional farewell.
“I will never forget the millions of Nerazzurri fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together. I will never forget you.”
Inzaghi departs with a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies, and three Supercoppa Italiana triumphs to his name. More than the silverware, he helped rebuild Inter’s identity following the exit of Antonio Conte and a summer exodus in 2021. Under his stewardship, Inter regained domestic respect and became a consistent force in Europe, reaching two Champions League finals in three years.
Both finals famously ended in the opposition team securing a treble by defeating Inter. First came the narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Istanbul in 2023, then on Saturday the record thrashing in Munich.
The defeat to the Parisians, coupled with a late collapse that saw Inter go from chasing the treble to going trophyless within a month, appears to have sealed his fate.
Inter president Giuseppe Marotta praised Inzaghi for his honesty and professionalism: “I would like to thank Simone for the work done, for the passion shown, and the sincerity in the discussion that led to this decision.
“Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day, can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened.”
