Barcelona youngster told teammates earlier in April that Real Madrid “simply can’t beat us” this year
Lamine Yamal has revealed that his team have faced Real Madrid throughout this season with the belief that they are the better team. The youngster’s statement comes after Barcelona’s latest clásico victory, a 4-3 comeback win at Montjuic.
“It doesn’t feel good when Madrid beat you,” Yamal told ESPN after the match. “It’s true we didn’t beat them last year, we suffered, and this year we gave everything to turn it around.
“We don’t have that fear of them that maybe other teams have against them. So we gave it our all. We feel like we’re better than every other team, that’s the mentality we go out with.
“I think that’s how you have to play against them. You have to show up like you’re the better team and enjoy yourself, that’s it.”
Barcelona have dominated their arch-rivals this season, securing victories in all four clásico matches across different competitions. After the Copa del Rey victory in Seville in April, Yamal revealed that he had told his teammates before the game that “this year, they simply can’t beat us”.
The 17-year-old has been instrumental in all four clásico victories this season. In Seville he had two assists, and at Montjuic on Sunday he scored the second goal to cancel out Madrid’s earlier 2-0 lead courtesy of Kylian Mbappe.
Yamal’s performances have captivated fans and pundits alike, with some calling him the greatest young player the world has seen in 50 years.
With their latest win over Madrid, Barcelona are now seven points clear at the top of La Liga with only three matches remaining, effectively concluding the title race. It is now simply a matter of when and not if they seal their 28th La Liga title.
