Manchester United head coach calls on his players to “fight for places”
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is set to make significant changes for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup second-round match away to Grimsby Town, with Kobbie Mainoo, Andre Onana and summer signing Benjamin Sesko all expected to start.
United enter the competition at this stage for the first time in over a decade after failing to qualify for European football last season. Amorim confirmed he will use the tie to give minutes to those yet to feature this campaign.
Mainoo, who has performed at such a high level in the past that he was a key part of England’s Euro 2024 squad, has been on the fringes since Amorim took over.
Onana has also been on the bench for the opening league fixtures this season, while Sesko, the club’s £74m arrival from RB Leipzig this summer, has made two substitute appearances. The expectation is that he is in line for his full debut at Blundell Park.
“We have three games this week and we have quality players, so we need to do rotation to try to win every game,” said Amorim. “It is a normal thing that happens in other clubs.”
“They just need to fight for the places, then everything can change. Sometimes one is playing, at other moments, other guys are going to play, and we have the cups, so there will be a lot of games for everybody.”
