Scotland is going to the World Cup!

The Tartan Army has finally got their wish, ending a 28-year wait to qualify for the global football showpiece. A stunning 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park on Tuesday night sealed their spot in the 2026 World Cup tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The match was an emotional rollercoaster, with Scotland taking an early lead through Scott McTominay’s breathtaking overhead kick. However, Denmark equalised through Rasmus Hojlund’s penalty, and the game remained neck-and-neck until the dying minutes.

As it seemed Scotland would have to settle for the play-offs, Kieran Tierney scored a superb goal from 25 yards, and Kenny McLean sealed the win with an astonishing goal from the halfway line. The scenes of joy at Hampden Park were indescribable, with fans and players alike celebrating Scotland’s qualification.

Manager Steve Clarke, who has guided Scotland to two European Championships, was overjoyed, saying, “Tonight, it feels pretty special. This is the best feeling, I’ve waited a long time.” Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney and former tennis star Andy Murray also took to social media to express their excitement.

Scotland’s path to qualification was not easy, with a 3-2 defeat to Greece and a narrow 2-1 win over Belarus earlier in the campaign. However, a shock 2-2 draw between Denmark and Belarus on Saturday gave Scotland the chance to seal automatic qualification, and they grabbed it with both hands.

The news has sparked celebrations across Scotland, with fans planning trips to North America to cheer on their team. Scotland’s qualification marks a significant milestone for the country’s football, and fans are eager to see their team compete on the world stage.

The draw for the 2026 World Cup takes place on December 5, and Scotland will be looking to make it out of the group stage for the first time in their history.
