Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen shared a dramatic 3-3 draw in the Bundesliga as Matthias Ginter rescuing a late point for the hosts.

A thrilling Bundesliga encounter saw SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen battle to an entertaining 3-3 draw, with both sides exchanging momentum throughout a frantic contest. The result keeps Freiburg’s hopes of European qualification alive while extending their impressive unbeaten home run.

Freiburg made the brighter start despite seeing less of the ball. Jan-Niklas Beste came close early on when his dangerous cross forced Alejandro Grimaldo into a desperate defensive intervention to prevent a clear scoring opportunity.

Leverkusen also had a scare when Robert Andrich was forced into emergency defending after goalkeeper Janis Blaswich could only parry a shot into danger. Freiburg appealed for a penalty during the scramble, but the referee allowed play to continue.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 34th minute through Vincenzo Grifo. The Italian forward’s scuffed finish was far from spectacular, but it proved historic as it marked his 105th goal for Freiburg, drawing him level with club legend Nils Petersen as the team’s joint all-time leading scorer.

Leverkusen responded almost immediately, with Christian Kofane sweeping a first-time effort into the corner to level the score.

Freiburg quickly regained the lead when Yuito Suzuki finished smartly after a clever dummy from Igor Matanović, but the visitors struck again before the break as Grimaldo curled in a trademark free-kick to make it 2-2.

The visitors carried their momentum into the second half and took the lead for the first time in the 52nd minute. Martin Terrier made a clever run before finishing calmly for his first Bundesliga goal since December, though Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu may have felt he could have done better at his near post.

Freiburg refused to give up and eventually found a late equaliser when Matthias Ginter rose inside the box to score his second goal in three matches. The defender even thought he had grabbed a dramatic winner in the closing minutes, only for the offside flag to rule it out.

The draw means Freiburg remain eighth in the standings while extending their unbeaten home run to 16 matches since the opening day of the season.
