Liverpool forward is still waiting for a first trophy with his national side

Mohamed Salah will lead Egypt to the World Cup after scoring twice in a 3-0 win over Djibouti in their qualifying match on Wednesday.

The result ensures Egypt will finish top of African qualifying Group A with one match to spare, booking their return to the global tournament for the first time since 2018.

At 33, this is likely to be Salah’s last World Cup appearance. The Egypt international played at the 2018 tournament in Russia, his only appearance so far. He scored twice but Egypt lost all three of their group matches and exited early.

The star winger has won several trophies at club level but has yet to achieve any success with his national side. He reached two Africa Cup of Nations finals with Egypt but lost both of them, against Cameroon in 2017 and Senegal in 2021.

While winning the World Cup may prove unlikely, Salah also has another chance for national team honours when he leads Egypt to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year.
