Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is remaining hopeful that team captain Virgil van Dijk can sign a contract extension with Liverpool soon, and wants to see the Dutchman next year.
Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk were the heroes as Liverpool overcame a stubborn West Ham side at Anfield on Sunday.
Van Dijk saved his own blushes after an embarrassing mix-up with Andy Robertson that led to an own goal to bring the game level in the 86th minute. The Dutchman was at the other end of the pitch just three minutes after and headed home from a Luiz Diaz corner to secure all three points.
Meanwhile, Salah was Liverpool’s brightest star in the game, playing a perfectly weighted pass in the first half for Luiz Diaz to finish and put Liverpool ahead.
The playmaker is now eager to provide another assist – but off the pitch, and this time for Van Dijk’s contract.
Fulltime Herald reported last week that Van Dijk had held positive talks with Liverpool about a contract extension. This was back when it was still unclear whether Salah would be offered a new contract or not.
However, the Egyptian has now penned down a new £400,000-per-week contract that will keep him at Liverpool until the summer of 2027, while Van Dijk’s contract situation is yet to be announced.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the victory over West Ham, Salah expressed his interest in seeing Van Dijk come to an agreement with Liverpool soon.
“I am glad that we managed to [agree and sign my contract extension] early before the end of the season,” said the Egypt international, “and hopefully Virgil also will be next.”
This drew laughter from Van Dijk and the Sky Sports journalist, and chuckling as well, Salah interjected: “I said hopefully!”
“Look, [Virgil] can do whatever he wants,” he added. “I would love to see him again next year, but of course he can choose whatever he wants in his future.”
