Former Manchester United striker has won 3 out of 24 matches in charge of the Foxes
Ruud van Nistelrooy has suggested he may be leaving Leicester City at the end of the season, saying he is working hard to “leave the club in the best position possible”.
The Dutchman, who joined the Foxes in midseason after Steve Cooper was sacked, stopped short of confirming his departure, but made it clear that his future is far from settled.
“The responsibility of the manager is that you’re working and doing everything you can in the interest of the football club,” said Van Nistelrooy when asked about his position. “That’s the way I approach it. That’s what the supporters can rely on, that I do that.”
Leicester were relegated early in April with five games to go. Damning statistics showed that Van Nistelrooy’s side had picked up only one victory in their last 18 matches and lost all of the previous 10 leading up to the gameweek their drop was confirmed.
But the club are yet to decide whether they will continue working with the former Manchester United interim manager, who signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Foxes in November, although expectations are that the two parties will go their separate ways at the end of the season.
“My job day to day is, of course, developing and performing in the short term, but also doing everything I can to leave the club in the best position possible,” said Van Nistelrooy.
“That’s also part of the job, although within this situation, sometimes it’s hard to do because there are certain things that are not clear enough. So that clarity will only help.
“I wish I could share more. Obviously, we will when there’s news, but there isn’t.
“I think sharing with the fanbase information regarding the club is something very important that I think that we should do when it’s there.”
