The United head coach says striker needs to score, but that poor performances have come from team as a whole

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has spoken in defence of embattled young striker Rasmus Hojlund. The Portuguese was speaking after his side’s disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“If you look at the matches,” said Amorim, “you’ll see that several of our players missed excellent chances, not just Rasmus.

“Of course, his job is to score goals because he’s a striker, but this depends on the whole team. I’ve said this before. Our team needs to score more, not just Rasmus missing opportunities.”

Hojlund has scored only three Premier League goals this season, and just one in the last 17 games. However, United as a team have been woeful this season. They currently sit 14th in the Premier League table with five matches to go, and are guaranteed to have their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League.

“I know the only way is to work with him, showing him videos,” said Amorim of Hojlund. “He needs to score, but he won’t if you isolate him from the team, so I try to address this problem during the matches. Like any striker, he needs to score, that’s it.”
