Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is furious with his team after seeing his side “gift Leeds a point” in a frustrating 2-2 draw

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior cut a frustrated figure after watching his side surrender a winning position in a 2-2 draw against Leeds United on Tuesday night.

Despite extending his unbeaten start in the Premier League, Rosenior made it clear that he was far from satisfied with the outcome.

“I don’t want to talk about the football that we played,” Rosenior said. “If we want to improve and get to where we want to be, we have to make sure we’re switched on for 90 minutes. It’s as simple as that.” While he praised phases of his team’s performance, he stressed that lapses in concentration ultimately cost them maximum points.

Chelsea looked on course for another victory under Rosenior after goals from Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer put them in control. However, the Blues failed to manage key moments in the second half, allowing Leeds to claw their way back into the contest within six minutes of the restart.

Leeds found a way back into the game when Moises Caicedo was adjudged to have fouled Jayden Bogle inside the area. Lukas Nmecha converted from the spot to halve the deficit, before Noah Okafor capitalised on a loose ball to level the score.

Rosenior did not hide his disappointment over the penalty decision, describing it as “a poor decision” from Caicedo that shifted the momentum of the match.

“Moi is a magnificent player and has been top since I came in, but we made a poor decision there. We give away a penalty,” he said. Rosenior added that once the penalty was converted, Leeds began playing more directly, winning second balls and putting Chelsea under sustained pressure.

The Chelsea boss also questioned whether Okafor’s equaliser should have stood, believing there may have been a handball in the build-up. “At the time I did [think it was handball]. I still haven’t seen it. The rule is if there is any contact with his hand, it should be disallowed,” Rosenior explained, urging VAR to provide clearer support to the on-field referee.

In the end, Rosenior felt his team only had themselves to blame. “We should come away with three points, and we haven’t because in two moments in the game we haven’t taken care of the situation,” he said. “These are small moments that have cost us three points today.”

Rosenior is right to be frustrated as a win against Leeds would’ve seen Chelsea leapfrog Manchester United into fourth place as the Red Devils played out a 1-1 draw against West Ham.

Chelsea would’ve also been a point off Aston Villa in 3rd place, who would be in action today.

The same defensive lapses that were seen under Maresca have appeared again under Rosenior. Rosenior believes that for the second goal, all his team had to do was clear the ball. He mentioned that he will show the tape to the team, hoping that they won’t repeat the mistake again.

Speaking on Cole Palmer’s last-minute miss, he said that 99 out of a 100 times, Cole Palmer would’ve buried the chance, and he won’t blame the Englishman for the one time he missed.  Palmer played the full 90 minutes for the first time since returning from injury, and he got a goal and an assist.

Rosenior hopes that Palmer can learn and move from the experience, and help Chelsea achieve their goals for the season.
