Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first active footballer to reach billionaire status, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Bloomberg estimates Ronaldo’s wealth at $1.4bn, making him the first footballer still competing professionally to enter the index.

His fortune has come from a combination of his wages, global endorsements, and investments, although most of it comes from his wages, including his record-breaking salary at Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

The 40-year-old forward signed an extended contract earlier this year reportedly worth around $400m, tax-free. The deal has significantly boosted his income, which was already the highest in world football.

Ronaldo’s total career earnings have now surpassed those of Lionel Messi and LeBron James, according to Bloomberg’s analysis.

Although at 40 the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is one of the oldest players still active in the game, he has insisted that he wants to continue. Ronaldo’s contract as Al-Nassr runs until 2027 and he has stated his aim to reach 1000 career goals. The Portuguese currently has 946.

“People, especially my family, say: ‘It’s time for you to stop. You’ve done everything. Why do you want to score a thousand goals?” said Ronaldo.

“But I don’t think so. I think I’m still producing good things. I’m helping my club and the national team. Why not keep going?

“I’m sure that when I finish, I’ll be fulfilled, because I gave it my all. I know I don’t have many more years, but the few I have, I try to enjoy to the fullest.”
