Defender insists that offside call against Manchester City was wrong decision

Andrew Robertson has said it is too early to say that Liverpool no longer have a chance of retaining the Premier League title.

The champions had a difficult October that saw them lose six of seven matches in all competitions. The defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday was their fifth league defeat in 11 games.

However, Robertson said: “I don’t think you can talk about the title this early on in the season, regardless of what position you’re in.

“You need to start winning games consistently for that to even come into question. It’s definitely not a question that’s getting spoken about in the changing room or anything.”

The loss to City left Arne Slot’s side eighth in the table and eight points behind leaders Arsenal. Statistics show that recent league winners do not tend to lose more than six games throughout the season. It means the margin of error is now slimmer than ever for Arne Slot’s side with 27 matches still to go.

“Obviously, we’ve given ourselves a huge uphill battle,” said Robertson. “But I don’t think any of the teams will really look at the league table until we’re halfway through. That’s what we’ve got to do, pick up points on a more consistent basis. Then let’s see where we are after Christmas.”

The defender was adjudged to be offside when Virgil van Dijk headed in what could have been an equaliser in the first half. But the decision was controversial as Robertson did not touch or attempt to play the ball, and some could argue he was not in Gianluigi Donnarumma’s line of sight.

Robertson said: “I can’t really comment on it. I think we’ll let other people do that. But for me, it looks as if I duck out the way. I don’t think the keeper is in any eyeline to me.

“That’s the rules we got told at the start of the season, so it was a little bit of a difficult one. But, if I’m being honest, we’d have probably been fortunate to be on level terms.”
