For years, Robertson has been a key player for Liverpool, but signs of decline are appearing as he reaches the last lap of his career
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is “not sure” what the future holds for him at the club, although talks are currently ongoing about a contract extension.
The left-back’s current deal will expire in June 2026, by which time he’ll be 32, so it is unclear whether Liverpool will offer him an extension. The club are already targeting Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, with the deal reportedly likely to happen this summer.
“We’ve had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I’m not sure,” Robertson told Sky Sports.
“All I know is tomorrow I fly off on holiday and it’s well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season. That’s all my focus is. I can’t look too far ahead, I never have done that so I’m not going to start doing that now.
“I know the position I’m in, I know I’ve only got a year left. A lot’s getting said, but my pure focus is being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids.
“Then I’ll try and come back in the best shape possible for pre-season and then we’ll see what the future holds when those decisions come.”
Robertson played 45 games for Liverpool in the 2024-25 season, which shows that he was a key player for Arne Slot’s title winning squad. However, there have been obvious signs of decline in the player’s performances as he reaches the last lap of his career.
Statistics such as his top speed, number of carries into the penalty box, and assists have been dropping. Last season, he contributed only two assists in all of those 45 games he played. But he has also looked shaky and made costly errors such as in Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
The arrival of Kerkez could potentially see Robertson’s minutes drastically reduced, but the left-back is ready for the challenge.
“When you play for a big club like Liverpool, you expect challenges, you expect to have competition,” said Robertson. “I’ve always faced that and so has everyone in their own positions.
“We expect nothing less. We want the club to be ambitious, they’re doing that. And wherever we fit into that, if you’re happy with your role, you stay and you do it, and if you’re not, then I’m sure there will be some people out the door as well.
“But that’s the nature of football, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and we have to keep moving.”
