Left-back backs his side to find consistency and win silverware this season
Andy Robertson has insisted his loyalty to Liverpool never came into question this season despite getting interest from Tottenham in the winter window.
The Scotland captain, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, confirmed that discussions took place over a potential move to north London, but he ultimately decided his future for now remained at Anfield, where he has spent nearly a decade.
“There was obviously interest there,” Robertson said. “There were discussions had with both sets of clubs. But the decision was that I wanted to stay. I was never not committed. I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed.
“That’s always been my mindset. This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything.
“It’s been a fantastic relationship so hopefully that continues and obviously January happened, but it is now gone. Now we move forward.
“My focus never came off trying to help the lads on the pitch and in training.”
Robertson’s future at Liverpool came into question after the club signed left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth last summer. The arrival of the Hungarian international greatly reduced Robertson’s playing time after he was preferred by Arne Slot.
But the Scotland international reminded supporters of his value on Friday night when he broke the deadlock in stunning fashion in Liverpool’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Wolves. The defender later also set up Mohamed Salah to help secure the win.
Talk of a contract decision has continued to swirl, but Robertson said any discussions about his future will remain private between himself and the club’s leadership.
“I’ve always said that will stay between me and the club,” Robertson said. “I don’t think it will get played out in public. It is not one of them.
“I have got an amazing relationship with Richard [Hughes], Mike Gordon and Michael Edwards. These people brought me to the football club. They have helped make me who I am.
“I think out of respect to them, and they have respected me, then the conversations will be in-house. When a decision is made, and we’re getting to the point where I only have three months left on my contract, it will be announced to you guys.”
Whether or not it is his last season on Merseyside, Robertson insists he is focussed on helping Slot’s side finish the campaign strongly.
“My thought process is I want to win trophies at Liverpool,” said Robertson. “It’s not gone the way that we wanted in the league, that is clear.
“If we have more performances like we did at Wolves [in the FA Cup] then we have a chance. If we play like Tuesday [in the Premier League loss to Wolves] then we have no chance. So we need to try and find that consistency.
“Hopefully at the end of the season we can all have a smile on our faces and that is obviously what we are working towards.”
