Liverpool hesitant to offer contract extensions to players over 30, but left-back wants to remain at Anfield “for many years to come”

Andy Robertson has asked for support as he enters the final stretch of his Liverpool contract. The left-back jokingly urged Jamie Carragher and other pundits to make noise about his future just as they have done for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

During a charity event, the 31-year-old Scotland international went into a discussion with Carragher about his contract situation. His current deal runs until the summer of 2026, but the Liverpool ownership have recently shown unwillingness to offer contracts to players in their thirties. It took half a season to decide on contract extensions for Salah and Van Dijk, and potential successors to Robertson are already being linked to the club, especially Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

“I have only got a year left so I hope all you guys can help me with making the same noise around a new contract as you did with Mo and Virgil’s,” Robertson said to Carragher. “Maybe you can stop linking the club with other left-backs as well!”

Now in his eighth season at Liverpool, Robertson was one of the defining figures of the Jurgen Klopp era, a full-back who can bomb up and down the flank at high energy and whip in dangerous crosses. Both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have distinguished themselves as two of the greatest full-backs in the club’s rich history. They top the all-time assist charts for full-backs in the Premier League, with over 100 between them, and they have won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds.

However, while Alexander-Arnold is almost certain to depart the club this summer, Robertson wants to stay at Anfield for much longer. The tricky bit is that his performance levels have dipped at times and he is on the wrong side of 30, which means that his future may be under scrutiny in terms of a contract extension.

Still, Robertson remains confident in his ability to contribute at the highest level.

“I am not as young as I once was but I love this club and I have had some great memories here, so let’s see what the future holds,” he said.

“I still believe I can still produce good performances and some really good performances and I think I have done that this season.

“I still think I can produce at the top level and if I can do that then that is where I belong and hopefully I can stay here for many years to come.”
