Poland international says he must first “answer the questions” himself before making any declarations
Robert Lewandowski has suggested he could be nearing the end of his international career after Poland failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Poland were eliminated following a 3-2 defeat to Sweden in their play-off final in Stockholm. Shortly after the match, the Lewandowski posted a photo of himself leaving the pitch on social media, accompanied by the song “Time to Say Goodbye” by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli, prompting speculation about his future with the national team.
Despite the post, Lewandowski refused to confirm his retirement.
“I am not in a position to make any declarations,” said the 37-year-old. I will return to my club; I still have some matches to play. I will have to answer the questions in the back of my head for myself.”
The Barcelona striker briefly retired from the national team in August after a dispute with former coach Michal Probierz. He was recalled after Probierz stepped down but now faces the prospect of ending his international career without another World Cup appearance.
Lewandowski has been a central figure for Poland since making his debut in 2008 and has captained the side since 2014. He remains the country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, with 89 goals in 165 appearances.
