Youngster has expressed his desire to continue playing at his “dream club” City
Manchester City are close to finalising a new long-term contract with academy graduate Rico Lewis.
Talks between the club and the 20-year-old defender have progressed in recent weeks, with an agreement now in place for a deal running until 2030, including the option of a further year.
The paperwork has not yet been signed, but all parties are confident the extension will be confirmed soon.
Lewis joined City’s academy at the age of eight, before breaking into the senior team under Pep Guardiola in 2022. Since then he has made close to 100 first-team appearances.
He is comfortable as both a left and right full-back or in midfield, which has allowed him to become a regular in City’s matchday squads, featuring 44 times last season.
The contract discussions came after Nottingham Forest made a move to sign the England player this summer. Forest were prepared to offer Lewis a significant pay rise, but the youngster made it clear City is his “dream club” and he has “never ever seen myself at a different club”.
Guardiola has consistently spoken of his admiration for Lewis, praising his tactical understanding and maturity. The teenager started City’s Premier League opener at Wolves on Saturday, providing the assist for Erling Haaland’s first goal in a 4-0 win.
