Caretaker boss Sébastien Tambouret, stepping in after Habib Beye’s departure, made several changes to the side that had lost to Lens. One of the players he kept faith with was Esteban Lepaul, who nearly justified that decision inside six minutes when his long-range strike clipped the outside of the post.
Goalkeeper Brice Samba, another recalled starter, played a crucial role early on. In the 12th minute, Ousmane Dembélé slipped Désiré Doué through on goal, but Samba stood firm to deny the youngster’s delicate chip and keep the contest level.
PSG began to assert control after the half-hour mark, with Dembélé forcing Samba into a sharp save from a curling effort. However, it was Rennes who struck first, as Musa Al-Taamari chased down a ball over the top, cut inside Willian Pacho, and calmly slotted past Matvey Safonov to score only his third league goal of the season.
Just before half-time, Nuno Mendes combined cleverly with Kvaratskhelia to set up João Neves, but the midfielder failed to connect cleanly, allowing the ball to drift wide. After the break, the hosts missed a golden opportunity to double their advantage when Arnaud Nordin shot wide following Ilya Zabarnyi’s loose touch.
The home side would not be denied for long. Just past the hour mark, Szymański’s cross found Lepaul, who powered a header beyond Safonov to make it 2-0. PSG responded almost immediately, with Achraf Hakimi’s deflected cross dropping perfectly for Dembélé to nod home from close range, setting up a tense finale.
Luis Enrique’s men pushed hard for an equaliser, but Samba denied Gonçalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola fired wide after weaving through the defence.
Rennes ultimately sealed the win in the final 10 minutes, as Ludovic Blas squared for Breel Embolo, who bundled the ball home to cap a memorable night and dramatically shake up the Ligue 1 title race.
PSG’s lead has now been cut to two points and they are in danger of dropping to second place should Lens win their game. This loss also means PSG have won only four games from their last eight in all competitions.
