Ronald Koeman has a slew of options in midfield, including Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert

Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders will have a tough time securing a starting spot in the Netherlands team for the 2026 World Cup.

Pep Guardiola’s £46.5m summer signing from AC Milan was left on the bench for Sunday’s 4-0 win over Finland, with Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert started in attacking midfield alongside Frenkie de Jong and Ryan Gravenberch.

Kluivert repaid the coach’s faith, playing a direct role in two goals as the Dutch team maintained top spot in their qualifying group.

Manager Ronald Koeman admitted afterwards that he faces difficult choices regarding the starting XI, with De Jong, Gravenberch, Reijnders, Kluivert and Tottenham’s Xavi Simons all available for selection.

He also said his decision to bench Reijnders and start Kluivert against Finland was tactical rather than stemming from doubts over Reijnders’ ability or form.

“These are difficult choices,” said Koeman. “Frenkie, Ryan and Tijjani can play anywhere. You keep a great player on the bench.

“Justin filled in well, but Tijjani can also play well there, as can Xavi Simons. I don’t have a preference.

“Kluivert brings a different dynamic to the team. But for Spain, for example, Dani Olmo sometimes sits on the bench because Pedri is playing. Those are choices you make.”

Kluivert has been one of the key players in Andoni Iraola’s impressive Bournemouth team. He scored 12 goals and delivered six assists in 34 Premier League games for the Cherries last season as they gunned for the European places, ultimately missing out after finishing ninth.

“I try to give myself to the team,” Kluivert said. “I do bring something different than the other three midfielders.

“I have slightly different qualities. The manager has more options, and that’s a good thing. We need that.”
