Chelsea captain Reece James has signed a new long-term contract until 2032, reportedly accepting a lower base salary under the club’s performance-based pay structure.
Reece James has committed his long-term future to Chelsea after signing a new six-year contract extension that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
The new agreement replaces the defender’s previous contract, which had been signed shortly after the club’s takeover and was originally set to run until 2028. The fresh deal further strengthens James’ connection with the club he has represented since his academy days.

According to reports, the contract introduces a revised salary structure. Under his previous agreement, the 26-year-old right-back earned a guaranteed wage of around £250,000 per week.
However, the new deal reportedly aligns with the financial model introduced by Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo. The structure focuses heavily on performance-related incentives rather than fixed salaries.
As part of this system, James is believed to have accepted a lower guaranteed base wage that is supplemented by bonuses linked to appearances, individual performances, and overall team success.
The contract extension also reflects the defender’s impressive return to fitness after several injury setbacks earlier in his career. Over the past year, he has remained largely injury-free and has made 35 appearances during the 2025/26 season under Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
Since making his senior debut, the academy graduate has played 225 matches for Chelsea, scoring 16 goals and providing 31 assists. He has also been part of several major triumphs, including the club’s victories in the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
