The incident is the latest in a series of racist abuse directed at players across Spanish football
Spain’s State Commission against Violence and Racism in Sport has proposed a €4,000 fine against a Real Oviedo supporter who racially abused Marcus Rashford during a match against Barcelona last month.
The incident occurred on 25 September during Barcelona’s 3-1 win at Oviedo’s Carlos Tartiere Stadium. A video circulated on social media showed a fan making racist gestures towards Rashford and La Liga filed a formal complaint with Spain’s National Police.
The individual responsible has been identified by the authorities with the aid of security cameras in the stadium. The proposed sanction will need to be confirmed by a court.
The incident is the latest in a series of racist abuse directed at players across Spanish football. Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, and Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams were all racially abused, with the culprits receiving fines and suspended prison sentences.
Rashford has experienced several episodes of racist abuse in his career both online and in person. After being repeatedly targeted on social media in 2024, while playing for Manchester United, the forward publicly declared that “enough is enough” and called for stronger action by social platforms and authorities.
Anti-discrimination bodies have heavily campaigned against racist abuse in Spain. La Liga president Javier Tebas also called for stricter measures to combat the abuse within stadiums.
Spanish authorities have since increased their efforts against racism in matches this season following several high-profile racism cases, including those involving Vinicius and Williams.
