France international missed his side’s Club World Cup opener on Wednesday due to a fever

Kylian Mbappe may be unable to feature for Real Madrid in their second Club World Cup game against Mexican side Pachuca due to acute gastroenteritis.

The club announced on Thursday that the player has been hospitalised after his condition worsened despite the efforts of the medical team.

The statement read: “Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment.”

Mbappe had missed training on Tuesday due to what was described as a fever. He then proceeded to miss the team’s opener against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in the ongoing tournament in the US.

After the match, which Real Madrid drew 1-1, manager Xabi Alonso was asked if Mbappe would be available for the next one and the Spaniard said “we don’t know, we’ll have to see how his recovery goes”.

Mbappe suffered complications throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening before the club’s medical staff decided to admit him to hospital after the medication provided to him did not have the desired effect.
